Physical activities to keep kids active during winter are essential for your child’s growth and development. But since winter days are colder and shorter most parents tend to keep kids indoors to protect them from the cold.

Kids have a lot of energy and need to be active to burn that energy and also to stay fit even during winter. All you need is a little planning and a few precautions to keep kids active during winter. Dress them up appropriately to keep them warm, apply sunscreen on the exposed parts of their skin, and give them a bottle of water to make sure they are well hydrated and they are good to head outdoors for some activities.

Why is it important for kids to stay active in winter?

As mentioned exercise is essential, no matter the season because it helps reduce the risk of obesity and type 2 diabetes in kids and also improves their mental health. It also makes their bones and muscles.

All the activities need not be outdoors, you can even involve them in simple activities like playing hide and seek at home. Listed below are 5 physical activities to keep your kids active during winter:

Physical Activities To Keep Kids Active During Winter

1. Enrol them in organized sporting:

Enrolling your kids in a class is a great way to incorporate exercise into their weekly schedule. There are many organised indoor activities or sports for kids to try out, find one that’s close to your area or within the neighbourhood. You can enrol them in indoor sporting classes like yoga, dance, gymnastics, etc.

2. Exercise time out of chore time:

Household chores allow you to do two things at once because they are already physical exercises. As your child moves, you have the opportunity to teach them about responsibility. However, there are ways to increase their physical difficulty while also increasing their enjoyment. There are various methods for doing this, including:

  • Dance breaks: Take a dance break in the mid of chores, and play some of their preferred music every couple of minutes. Ask them to start dancing as soon as they hear it until the song is finished. It makes doing the chores much more enjoyable for the kids.
  • Try to give your child tasks that need them to move around, like walking the dog. Take them along if they are too young to go outdoors on their own.

3. Turn TV time into exercise time:

Most kids tend to spend more time in front of the TV especially during winter, as it’s too cold to go outdoors. You can make them more active by asking them to take walks around the living room, duck, and jump, every time there is a commercial break!

4. Workout videos to get moving:

Put on a workout video that is targeted at kids and families. These videos use music and movements that are age-appropriate. Since many videos include kids, your child can see that other kids their age are doing it and enjoying it too. It adds more fun when you join them too.

5. Indoor obstacle course:

You can get creative with this one. An obstacle course is always a huge hit with kids. You can use things you have around the house to create obstacles. Encourage kids to crawl, jump and wiggle their way to fun.

No matter what kind of physical exercise your child engages in, be sure to watch out for their safety at all times. Don’t push them above their limitations, and remove anything that may cause injuries or harm while doing the activities.
