To brush up on the terms, OB-GYN stands for obstetrics and gynaecology. Now, what’s the difference between these two similar fields? Both deal primarily with women healthcare. Gynaecology deals with the female body at any point in time, right from their first period, through sexual interactions and goes beyond menopause. Obstetrics is a field that specializes in pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, reproduction and postpartum bodily functions. They both provide medical and surgical assistance depending on the need.
A lot of people avoid visits to their ob-gyn due to the discomfort of having to physically or verbally reveal details of their genital areas or even their sex life. However, before you skip a visit to your ob-gyn, remember that since this field is their specialization, they’re probably the only people you can consult regarding these matters with zero hesitation or embarrassment. Here are a couple of things that your ob-gyn won’t tell you but expect you to keep in mind.
Everyone has it, different people just have different choices regarding how to groom themselves. Body hair is the most natural phenomena, and opposite to being repulsive, it actually prevents your sensitive areas from a lot of foreign invasive bodies. So if you’re planning on skipping your appointment because you forgot to get rid of your hair down there, reconsider your decision. They see this on an everyday basis and it is as normal to them as seeing their patient’s face.
You probably need to give them more details about your sex life than you give your best friend. They couldn’t care less how many active sexual partners you have or what kind of sex you’re into. Their main aim to get all the details so they can diagnose you properly and give you all the information you need on having healthy physical relationships.
A lot of women are petrified of the day they poop while giving birth to their child. But the surgeons say that almost every woman poops on the delivery table and there are a lot of other things that you need to concentrate on rather than be embarrassed about your natural bowel movements. They’ve seen it happen and are professionally and personally equipped to handle it if the situation arises. The only hindrance is your own thoughts of embarrassment.
A lot of women are embarrassed about how their vagina smells. However, that’s probably why you’re at the gynaec’s in the first place, to diagnose why you feel your vagina smells like it does. It’s better to get it checked and treated before it develops into something worse and will have you running to the doctors eventually.
Periods are last on the list of things that make these doctors uncomfortable. So, if your situation is urgent and you’re on your period, you don’t have to skip your appointment. They see a lot of blood in the operation theatre anyway. Just let them know in advance before you decide to reschedule.
