In this article, we’ll discuss the essentials for keeping your baby warm during winter with the right clothing.

Essential Winter Clothing Tips For Babies

Newborns have less fat to insulate against the cold so therefore they can’t store enough energy to produce more heat. The younger the baby, the smaller the ratio of their body mass to body surface that’s the reason why more heat escapes through her skin. All the more reason why you need to keep your baby warm especially during winter.

1. Dress the baby in layers

Dress the baby in light, breathable layers such as a onesie, a long-sleeved shirt, and a warm sweater. This will allow you to add or remove layers as needed to keep the baby warm and comfortable.

2. Use a hat

A hat will help keep the baby’s head and ears warm, which is important because a significant amount of body heat can be lost through the head.

3. Choose the right materials

Natural materials like wool, bamboo, cotton and cashmere are great for keeping the baby warm, as they are soft, lightweight, provide excellent insulation, and also let your baby’s skin breathe. However, be mindful while layering your baby as it can cause rashes and prickly heat. Besides removing the layers in case your baby is sweating, use a natural and talc-free baby powder to keep heat rashes away from the baby.

4. Cover hands and feet

Use mittens or gloves to cover the baby’s hands, and socks or booties to cover the feet. These areas are particularly vulnerable to the cold, so it’s important to keep them warm.

5. Consider a snowsuit

If you’re going to be spending a lot of time outdoors in cold weather, a snowsuit can be a great option. Snowsuits are designed to keep the baby warm and dry, and they are available in many different sizes and styles.

How To Tell If Your Baby Is Too Cold?

If your baby is showing any of these signs then make sure you dress your baby in an extra layer:

  • Their lips are blue.
  • Your baby is fussy.
  • They are shivering.
  • Their skin is pale or blotchy.
  • The baby is very sleepy or you have a difficult time waking them up.
  • Their legs, arms, back of their neck, chest or cheeks feel cold to the touch.

These tips should help you keep your baby warm and comfortable when it’s cold outside. Remember to always check the baby frequently to make sure they are not too hot or too cold. If you have any concerns, consult your paediatrician.
