For the first one year, I never used any baby powder for my kids. With so much controversy around a talcum powder, I was always apprehensive about using the same. The biggest concern had always been - how safe are these baby powders? Honestly, I never had time to do any research so I chose to stay away from them.
But now that A&A are growing up, I find it essential to use a baby powder for them. Mumbai's hot and humid weather is terrible. And these kids are super active and develop rashes & heat easily. So, I did my research and realised that baby powders are safe to use as long as they are TALC-FREE. Powders containing talc have fine particles which can be inhaled and cause irritation to the child's lungs. [Studies also link asbestos present in talc to be a cause of lung cancer]. Compared to that, talc-free powders with organic ingredients like cornstarch are far safer option and reduce the chances of inhalation.
I also realised that it's not just about choosing a talc free powder but also knowing the RIGHT WAY TO APPLY IT.
🔹 A powder should be used only on the basic body parts like neck and underarms.
🔹It shouldn't be smothered all over the body, especially face. (I personally avoid using it on the diaper area too).
🔹Also donot use puffs to apply.(I initially did that mistake). Just take a little on your palm and pat it gently with your fingers on the kid.
🔹Avoid sprinkling the powder directly from the bottle too as not just it leads to wastage but may also prove harmful to their eyes & mouth.
Do you take care of these things while using a baby powder for your kid?
