So it’s been a few weeks since you delivered and you’re just about getting a hang of managing your baby’s feed time, understanding latching techniques etc. But in the middle of all the frenzy, do you find yourself feeling unusually warm, or waking up at night drenched in sweat? Maybe you find yourself sweating just sitting on  the couch. Don’t worry, during the postpartum period, it really is normal to sweat like you have just had an intense cardio workout. Night sweats are also extremely common.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?

During pregnancy your body forms extra fluids to nourish the baby and now the postpartum hormones will kick in and ensure that the extra fluids which are no longer needed are removed from your system. The sweating will be fairly excessive in the first few days but will gradually reduce to normal as the hormones balance themselves.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

  • Indulge in some cool drinks or switch on the air  conditioner for a while to stay cool. Being in an air conditioned environment will not cause your baby to catch a cold. Remember to add an extra layer of clothing on the baby if you are keeping a temperature of below 24 degrees celsius.
  • It is possible that you may get dehydrated especially if you are also breastfeeding. Ensure that you have plenty of liquids to stay hydrated. Dehydration will also make you feel more tired and exhausted.
  • Wear loose, light and cotton clothing especially at night.
  • Place a towel on your pillow and on the bed to help absorb some of the moisture.
  • Take frequent showers during the day as this will help you to feel fresh and will also prevent heat rash and infection.
  • If you find yourself running a temperature then please visit the doctor.
