Make Your Own Baby Food

After breastfeeding, your baby and you step into a different world altogether called weaning. From purees and pulps to mashes and finger food, weaning can be exciting and challenging. Preparing baby food is relatively easy at home, but when travelling, what is a weaning mom to do?

Packaged instant baby cereal is an option, but not exactly the healthiest thing to give your baby for prolonged periods. So here’s a recipe for homemade instant baby cereal, as shared by my pediatrician.

  • 1 tbsp rice, powdered and roasted
  • 1/2 tbsp moong dal, powdered and roasted
  • 100 ml water, boiled and cooled
  • 1/4 tsp jeera powder
  • 1/4 tsp methi powder
  • 1/2 tsp cow ghee
  • Jaggery/gur to taste

First, wash the rice and moong dal separately and sundry them. Roast them separately in a pan and powder them. This powder can be stored in an airtight container in a refrigerator for a month.

Now, take a pan and add some water.

Mix the rice and moong dal powder in it. Stir to avoid lumps. Mix in the rest of the ingredients except the ghee. Bring it to a boil and let it simmer for half a minute to one minute. Add water to attain the desired consistency.

Now, add the ghee and your home made instant baby cereal is ready

Tip: Add the rice and dal powder as soon as you put the water to flame. this will make sure there are no lumps.

Note: The above measurements will give quantity equal to the bowl in the pic.

Hi Priyanka thanks for this helpful article . just wanted to know do we need to boil and cool the water got  from RO purifiers as well .

Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

Pooja Dixit... well i think its preferable to boil.. at least i boil the water even though it is from aquaguard.. i feel y take a chance...

Janvi Choithwani

Can I give it to my 3 months old daughter?

Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

@janvichoithwani.   no

Richa Kaushik

This is so well written.

why jaggery is good for baby??

Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

Jaggery contains iron and potassium.. also while making jaggery no chemical process is used unlike sugar.. hence the mineral salts in it remain intact.. however, like everything else it is to be given in moderation..

This is just in time

Can if B given to 6 months old baby? Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

Pooja Singh

I've read that ro water or mineral water should not; b given to Babies till 2 yrs of age instead we should give tap water boiled nd cooled

Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

@poojasinghmalasi. That must be for western countries where they get pure water through tap. Like in Singapore, they drink directly from tap. But in India i would say dont. The water is contaminated with so many things

Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

For 6 months if u hv started early weaning, then yes, or else wait for anither 15 days. First introduce, dall water n fruit purees

Can I directly dry roast washed dal and rice without sun dry??

Priyanka Maheshwari@Momzjourne

Unless u dry the washed dal n rice.. u won't be able to dry roast them properly.. if sun drying is not possible leave them overnight under the fan
