When our children are less than 5 years of age, their levels of immunity  are  low as compared to us, therefore they need extra care and protection from seasonal changes and diseases which come along. It’s even worse for mothers as we tend to sink in our mommy guilt as soon as we see our precious in pain.

Here’s some home remedies for curing common cold & cough in children:

1. Ginger and honey

Grate half an inch of ginger and add a spoonful of honey and mix well. Give this mixture to your kids whenever they have severe cough.

2. Peppercorns

In a pan, take one spoon of peppercorns & 2 spoonful of cumin. Roast and grind together. In a saucepan, add a glass of water, a spoon of this powder along with jaggery and give it a good boil. Feed this concoction warm to help your kids. You can store the rest of the mixture and use it.

3. Turmeric milk

Boil 1 glass of milk, a pinch of turmeric powder (if you can get raw turmeric it’s the best) and get it to a boil. Add sugar or honey and give it to your kids twice a day.

4. Steam nebulization

If you have a newborn, use a normal vaporiser while you breastfeed your baby, cover yourself up with a sheet so that baby can inhale those vapours. For more effective results add a pinch of ajwain seeds.

5. Basil (Tulsi), Ginger and Honey paste

Grind a few tulsi leaves to get 1 teaspoon of juice, add 3 to 4 drops of ginger juice and 1 tablespoon of honey. Give this daily till the cough subsides.

6. Nutmeg/Jaiphal

Make a paste by grinding one jaifal with water and make a paste (you can even grate it in pestle). Apply this paste on your baby’s chest, palms, back and forehead and just a little on the tip of nose.

7. Warm water

Warm water loosens the mucous formation and gives relief in the inflammation of the throat region due to coughing.

8. Nasal spray/ Saline drops

Use them at least thrice a day or as required to keep congestion away
Basil is one of the most versatile plants known. You can give 4 to 5 drops of basil juice with honey or add to your baby’s milk for immunity. It also works as a good anti allergen and antibiotic like turmeric.

9. Warm orange juice

As weird it may sound, Vitamin C cuts out cough and phlegm from body. Orange juice diluted a little with warm water naturally helps fighting cough and soothe the nasal tract.

10. Fig Water

Boil 6 to 7 dried figs and filter off the water, give 4 to 5 spoons at least 6 times a day to fight acute cough and wheezing.

11. Garlic and Mustard oil

Warm 2 tablespoons of mustard oil in a pan (don’t boil) add 2 garlic cloves and warm till they’re golden brown, filter out and apply lukewarm oil to baby’s head, forehead, chest and feet. This helps in cutting cough and congestion. Do it twice a day when baby sleeps.

12. Warm clothes

Keep your kids sufficiently covered of the weather is cold. Use protective caps, warm liners, socks etc. If you are a breastfeeding mother, its suggestive you shouldn’t eat anything cold either.

Bodies of children up to the age of 2 years are not able to regulate their temperature as efficiently as a grown up kid, so always make your baby wear 1 layer extra than you would do at a given time.
