Is overweight a problem for pregnancy

Being overweight during pregnancy can have many implications for you and your baby. Overweight pregnant moms-to-be are more prone to certain medical conditions that affect the health of both the mother and the baby. Babies of overweight mothers also tend to be more prone to certain medical conditions as compared to other babies. However, it is quite possible for you to have a healthy pregnancy while being overweight. As an overweight pregnant mother-to-be, you can minimize the effects of your weight on your pregnancy by taking certain proactive steps.

Be physically active

Being physically active throughout your pregnancy has many benefits for you and your baby. Activities such as walking and swimming are low-impact activities that will help you to remain active. You should consult a physician before beginning exercise, and be sure not to strain yourself. Pregnancy Yoga also helps to maintain flexibility and strengthen muscles during pregnancy. Losing weight while being pregnant is neither feasible nor advised, but the good news is that overweight pregnant mothers do not gain as much weight as they already have the extra fat that is required.

Go for regular check-ups

Regular gynecological check-ups are important as they help the doctor to closely monitor the progression of your pregnancy and the health of your baby and yourself. Do not skip any prenatal appointments and follow all your doctor’s advice. Discuss your concerns with your doctor and ask if you need to take any extra precautions during your pregnancy.

You will be tested for gestational diabetes early during your pregnancy and may require to monitor your blood sugar levels. You may require advanced ultrasound equipment for your tests and more frequent tests as ultrasound waves do not penetrate abdominal fat tissues easily.

Eat healthy

healthy pregnancy diet

Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is very important. Your body requires extra nutrients during this time, and your doctor may prescribe certain vitamin, calcium, and iron to supplement your diet. Eliminate all kinds of junk foods for good and ensure that every meal you take is loaded with goodness and health. If you are overweight, then you may have an overweight baby in womb, and a healthy and nutritious diet during  pregnancy is the first gift of health and well-being that you can offer to your child.
