When a child doesn’t like anything, he throws tantrums. The skill of parenting then demands a disciplinary action against the child or a subtle way of addressing his tantrums. But when a Mother throws a tantrum, what do you do? I am talking about Mother Earth in this case. Mother Earth has not been liking the way her children (we) have treated her till now and is throwing fits of anger every now and then through natural forces and calamities like tsunami and earthquake.

Since April 22 1970, close to 192 countries have come together with United States to address this issue and raise public awareness by observing Earth . On this day of action, as parents and teachers we have a primary responsibility of raising an awareness in our kids, the future children of Earth, while they have those positive thought windows open.

Let us instill the following information about Earth in our kids for better awareness:

1. What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated across 192 countries on April 22nd worldwide to observe environment protection. Various events are conducted worldwide by millions of people through various environmental protection agencies to contribute towards the wellbeing of Mother Nature. It was first observed on April 22 1970.

2. Biotic Factors:

It is important to explain the concept of ecosystem to children in a very basic way. The concept of food chain and how one living being is dependent on other to survive and how the chain is affected if a connection breaks, needs to be instilled in children from a very young age.

3. Protecting Natural resources:

Cutting trees or Deforestation and shortage of non renewable sources of energy are the biggest environmental issues that need to be addressed. Children should be fed with information of how these environment issues impact Mother Earth. Simple things like encouraging to plant more trees, save energy by switching off lights and fans when not in use help children understand the value of all the important resources that we are blessed with.

4. Protecting Endangered Species:

Older children should be made aware of endangered species acts and also should be well informed about how use of plastic is killing aquatic animals and how it should be avoided. Children are the best preachers. They can mend adults who break rules very well.

5. Pollution awareness

Cleanliness begins at home. If children are instilled with basic courtsey of throwing trash in dustbins, half the job is done. Children should be made aware of what causes land pollution, how chemicals are causing air and water pollution by exposing them to appropriate surroundings.

Children as young as preschoolers can understand these concepts if we can instill the knowledge appropriately. Today’s children are tomorrow’s future. We have to save the children and make Earth better for a safe tomorrow. Let us reiterate the importance of Earth Day 1970 every year, every day with our children and sow the seeds of protecting our Mother from a young age. Because when a mother gets angry, children are the first ones to face repercussions.

Let us not forget “ Earth does not belong to us. We belong to Earth”.
