Staying hydrated is as important as having a balanced diet during pregnancy. The water requirement of the body naturally increases during pregnancy due to the various functions that the body carries out to support the growing fetus.

These functions include, formation of amniotic fluid, the building of new tissue cells, flushing out toxins and waste, producing a higher amount of blood, carrying vitamins and nutrients to the fetus, and so on.

Other than supporting these important functions of fetal growth, staying well hydrated also has other health benefits like:

  • It reduces swelling in the body
  • Lowers the risk of UTI (urinary tract infection)
  • Helps to prevent or manage constipation
  • Lowers the risk of premature or preterm birth
  • Lowers the risk of birth defects caused due to dehydration
  • Makes your skin healthy and soft
  • Helps prevent burning sensation when passing urine
  • Supports the regulation of your body temperature

A pregnant woman is advised to have around 2.3 liters of water/day to keep herself well hydrated throughout the day.
