During the first trimester of pregnancy, hormonal changes, particularly the surge in progesterone levels, can impact the skin’s moisture balance. Progesterone, known as the pregnancy hormone, plays a vital role in supporting the development of the fetus but can also affect the body in various ways. 

One of its effects is reducing the production of natural oils in the skin, leading to dryness and dehydration. Some of the other reasons for dry skin patches during pregnancy first trimester are:

Not Drinking Enough Water 

During pregnancy, your body requires more fluids. The need for the fluid amount increases as the baby develops. Other pregnancy issues like vomiting, diarrhoea and morning sickness can also lead to dehydration.

Hydration

Drinking an adequate amount of water helps maintain overall hydration and supports skin health. Aim for at least eight glasses of water per day to keep your body hydrated from within.

Moisturise

Use a mild, fragrance-free moisturizer suitable for sensitive skin. Apply it generously after showering or bathing, as this helps lock in moisture. Look for products containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or shea butter, known for their hydrating properties.

Avoid hot showers and baths

Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness. Opt for lukewarm water instead and limit shower or bath time to avoid over-drying your skin.

Dry skin patches during pregnancy are common, however, sometimes they may be caused by more serious issues such as:

  • Gestational diabetes or iron deficiency anaemia

  • Cholestasis 

It is advisable to consult your doctor if you have any of the above issues or if you experience extremely itchy skin along with:

  • Low appetite
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Weight loss
  • Dark urine
  • Fatigue
