Mild stomach pain or cramps during pregnancy is normal and experienced by almost every woman. The most common reasons behind mild abdominal pain besides the hormonal and pregnancy-related changes are gas, acidity, upset stomach, constipation, bloating, or digestive problems.

Till the time the pain is mild and occasional, it’s generally not a worry. Severe abdominal pain accompanied by other symptoms could be alarming and need a doctor’s attention.

A few of the common dangerous symptoms accompanied by severe abdominal pain or cramps are:

·         Progressively heavier vaginal bleeding

·         Pain in the lower abdomen

·         Vomiting

·         Severe back pain

·         Weakness

·         Fever

Some of the above-mentioned symptoms are  associated with miscarriage and need immediate attention.

Severe abdominal pain is also associated with other pregnancy complications like:

  • An ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition, where the embryo is implanted outside the uterus and  that leads to severe pain in any lower portion of the abdomen
  • Placental abruption, again a life-threatening condition that’s characterized by the separation of the placenta from the uterus after the 20th week of gestation.
  • Preeclampsia, that’s marked by upper abdominal pain with high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine and may progress to eclampsia.

Besides these, Urinary tract infection is also a common non-pregnancy-related complication that a woman might have with severe abdominal pain .

  • Advice: These signs and symptoms when experienced should not be overlooked, rather they should be got to the doctor’s attention for immediate treatment.
