Pregnancy loss or miscarriage can result from medical conditions, chromosomal defects/ abnormalities, poor nutrition, bad lifestyle, certain medications, or environmental factors.
Chromosomal abnormalities cannot be prevented but since the risk of the same is known to increase after the age of 35 pregnancy could be planned earlier.
The use of over-the-counter medications and self-prescribed medicines during pregnancy can increase the risk of miscarriage and stillbirths. Some of the medications that can increase the risk of miscarriage include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), Retinoids, methotrexate, etc.
Environmental factors like lead, mercury, pesticides, solvents, and arsenic entering the drinking water supply can also increase the risk of miscarriage. Additionally, food poisoning caused by infected water also contributes to an increase in the risk of miscarriage.
Besides these, the lifestyle of the individual majorly contributed to such conditions of miscarriage and stillbirths.
Smoking, alcohol consumption, drug abuse, exposure to chemicals (occupational hazard), and heavy consumption of caffeine also contribute to miscarriage.
Adding to a bad lifestyle, prolonged or chronic stress, depression, and anxiety can also contribute to a certain extent to increase the risk of miscarriage or stillbirths.
All these factors must be taken care of and controlled in order to have a healthy pregnancy and avoid such mishappenings.
