Women who are planning to try again to conceive after a miscarriage eagerly wait for the menstrual periods to return. Returning to the regular menstrual cycle is an indication of physical recovery.

The time required for the first period to come after a miscarriage varies from person to person. It is also affected by factors like the regularity of the period cycle before pregnancy loss and the gestational time at which the pregnancy loss occurred. Most women can expect their first menstrual cycle around 4-6 weeks after a miscarriage.

A few things to expect from the first period after a miscarriage are:

· Periods are quite painful and involve abdominal cramps
· The vaginal discharge/bleeding has a strong odour.
· There is the presence of clots in the discharge due to heavy menstrual flow.
· The periods may last longer than usual.
· Variation in the bleeding (heavier or lighter)
· Experiencing brown vaginal discharge during menstruation.
· Tenderness of the breasts.

Most experts recommend that one should try for pregnancy after 2-3 normal menstrual cycles to make sure the body has enough time to heal and start regulating and having hormonal changes again due to pregnancy.
