You might have heard the old tale that if you eat a whole pineapple when you are pregnant, you’ll go into labour. However, this is just a myth and there’s no scientific evidence to support that pineapple is dangerous during pregnancy.

Pineapple is a safe and healthy choice when you are expecting. So, before you shun this tasty, nutritious fruit for the next nine months, here are some facts that you need to know.

Can Pineapple Be A Part Of A Healthy Pregnancy Diet?

Pineapple contains a type of enzyme called bromelain that softens the cervix and can trigger uterine contractions. Research has shown that bromelain tablets aren’t recommended for use during pregnancy as these can break down proteins in the body and lead to abnormal bleeding.

Although bromelain is found in the core of the pineapple, very little is actually in the flesh of the pineapple which is what we consume. The amount of bromelain in a single serving of pineapple isn’t likely to impact an expecting mum. Plus, reports suggest that normal intake of this fruit does not affect your pregnancy.

Dr. Pooja Marathe, Community Expert – Lactation & Nutrition says, “Pregnant women are usually advised to avoid pineapple during pregnancy because of the risk of miscarriage or preterm labour. But, it has no scientific evidence. Pineapple is an excellent source of nutrients that can help keep you and your baby healthy during your pregnancy. It’s rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, which can help reduce inflammation during pregnancy. The enzyme that can cause uterine contractions is found only in the core of the fruit which we don’t eat”.
