Priyanka Chopra On Freezing Her Eggs In Her Early 30s

Stating that it gets difficult to conceive after the age of 35, Priyanka recalled, “Although my mum insisted on this, I did do it for myself as well. I tell all my younger friends that the biological clock is real. It gets so much more challenging to get pregnant after the age of 35, and carry to full-term.”

The actor also added, “Science is at such an amazing place right now, and if you can afford it, this is the best gift that you can give yourself. You are literally taking the power of your biological clock. You can work for however long you want, and your eggs will be of the same age when you froze them.”

She ended by saying, “Also, I hadn’t met the person I wanted to have children with. So due to that anxiety, I just thought that it would be a great idea to go into this procedure.”

According to experts, more and more women are opting for egg freezing nowadays as it helps them embrace motherhood at an age when they are financially stable and ready and also reduces the risk of not being able to get pregnant due to increasing age.

In the next section, we give you more details about the egg freezing process, what it entails, and who it benefits.

What Is Egg Freezing?

Egg freezing or oocyte cryopreservation is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART), which involves the process of retrieving, freezing, and storing a woman’s eggs.

It allows a woman to pause her biological clock and bank her eggs for future use, and when they are ready to embrace motherhood. At a later date, the eggs retrieved can be thawed and combined with sperm to form an embryo. The embryo is then implanted into the uterus and if this transfer is successful, pregnancy is confirmed.

What Does This Procedure Entail?

The entire procedure of freezing your eggs can take 2-3 weeks to complete. The process is usually aligned with your menstrual cycle for optimal results. The following steps are involved in the egg freezing process.

  • Medical exam: First you will meet a fertility doctor who will conduct thorough tests, including blood work and hormonal testing to assess your health. They may also conduct a transvaginal ultrasound to determine your ovarian reserve and decide whether you are suitable for this procedure.
  • Ovarian monitoring and stimulation: Once you are cleared for the process, you will start taking birth control pills to synchronise your follicles and also start ovarian stimulation injections. During the stimulation stage, you will also have frequent monitoring visits to assess the progress of your follicles.
  • Egg retrieval: This step involves retrieving eggs from your ovaries. It will be conducted in your doctor’s chamber, where the embryologist will retrieve healthy eggs from your ovaries for later use. After the retrieval, the doctor will freeze the mature eggs using a process called vitrification.
  • Recovery: Your doctor may recommend you take plenty of rest after this process as you may experience abdominal cramping and bloating. You can heating pads or prescribed medications to relieve your pain.

Who Is This Procedure For?

This process is beneficial for every woman who does not wish to start their family immediately but later in life. It is also recommended for women undergoing cancer and chemotherapy treatments, or those with underlying conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) or endometriosis.

When Is The Right Time To Freeze Your Eggs?

The peak fertile age of most women is considered the early 30s. While you can still go for egg retrieval beyond this age, most fertility specialists do not recommend this process for women in their 40s.

Conclusion

We laud Priyanka Chopra for openly talking about her decision to freeze her eggs and also encouraging women to opt for this process if they wish to start their families later in life. Egg freezing is a proven solution for those who wish to preserve their fertility, and embrace parenthood when they are ready and financially stable.

If you are considering this process, then you should consult your fertility expert, who can then guide you on the later steps and treatment methods.
