After a miscarriage or a pregnancy loss, the first thing to do is to let the tissue and blood pass out from the uterus. This process of passing out the blood and tissues from the body either takes place naturally within 2 weeks of miscarriage or is done by dilation and curettage (D&C).
In D&C the cervix is dilated and the remaining tissues are scraped out. Medications could also be used in a few situations to let the uterus eliminate the tissue by itself. This may lead to excess bleeding nausea, cramps, fatigue, and diarrhea.
Recovering from such an event generally requires about 1-2 months. Menstruation starts within 5-6 weeks, but during the menstrual cycle, it’s advised that women should avoid using tampons.
To avoid the risk of infections and to support proper healing, one should avoid having intercourse at least for about 2-3 weeks. where medications, a healthy diet, and supplements will heal the physical damage. The emotional damage has to be given equal importance.
When dealing with emotional damage, it’s important to have support from close ones and especially from the partner. If needed do not refrain from taking therapy.
Additionally, when planning pregnancy after a miscarriage besides physical healing it is very important to heal emotionally. Be mentally prepared and emotionally ready before planning your pregnancy again. Also, confirm with your doctor if it’s ready for a healthy pregnancy and take necessary treatment if required.
