During the early stage of your pregnancy, you will notice changes in your cervix. The cervix is located between the uterus and vagina and its position can change during pregnancy. By looking at the cervix position change in early pregnancy, it is possible to tell when conception occurred.

Here’s all that you need to know about cervix change in early pregnancy.

What Is The Cervix?

The cervix is a tubular-shaped narrow structure that lies at the lower end of the uterus. It extends into the vagina and gets filled with mucus during pregnancy, called the mucus plug which acts as a protective barrier. During pregnancy, the cervix position is long, firm, and remains closed until the third trimester.

How Does The Cervix Feel In Early Pregnancy?

During early pregnancy, your cervix tends to rise up and feels soft. There is softness in the cervix during pregnancy as it contains more blood due to an increase in the levels of estrogen in the body.

Every woman has a different experience of when the cervix will rise. This means that even though the position of the cervix can let one know whether they’re pregnant, it may not be reliable. It’s best to confirm the pregnancy with your doctor.

Position of the Cervix in Early Pregnancy

If you are pregnant, your cervix will remain higher in your vagina. Usually, the cervix is low and open at the beginning of the cycle. It tends to pull up towards your uterus and closes once the body prepares itself to ovulate.

The cervix lowers again after ovulation. However, if a fertilized egg implants in your uterine wall, it does not happen.

Testing the Position of Cervix

You can conduct a self-test to check the position of your cervix. The first step is to be able to locate it. The cervix is about 3-6 inches and is inside your vagina. It normally feels like a small doughnut and has a tiny hole in the centre. Wash your hands with soap properly and avoid having long nails to prevent injuries to your cervix before checking the position. You can also check the position of your cervix right away after coming out of the shower.

Once you’re done with checking the position of your cervix, get into a seated position to avoid transmitting bacteria and then move your longest finger into your vagina. You might need to insert your finger up a few inches before you are able to feel your cervix.

Can Cervical Change Determine Pregnancy?

Cervical changes happen during early pregnancy. However, many women may find it difficult to detect them. Thus, cervical change is not a reliable method to determine pregnancy.

Plus, the position of your cervix may be different if you’ve recently had sex and also depends on the position of your body.

If you are able to identify certain changes and signs of early pregnancy such as sore breasts, nausea, fatigue, sudden cravings and frequent urination, they may help you detect a pregnancy. However, confirm the pregnancy using a pregnancy test after your first missed period.
